Design for Change Cardboard Challenge

Ray School is a high energy, high rigor environment fostering notable student growth. As Library Media Specialist, I find Cardboard Challenge an extremely engaging & student centered project. About 625 students, grades K-8 work in small group collaboration during Library class to create games, activities, models, structures, characters, costumes, useful items and more. They truly exercise creative freedom & innovation! Using the Science at Play videos, resources on simple machines & devices, applications for recycled materials, and construction techniques; students are challenged to design & construct unique, well made projects with instructions for use. Our Cardboard Challenge culminating event: Ray Create & PlayDate will be held after school on Thursday, January 26th from 4 pm – 6 pm in the school cafeteria. Class projects will be showcased; and during this event students can build new creations, interact with different students and play with all the wonderful artifacts there. Inviting The World To Play

The Global Cardboard Challenge began in 2012, following the overwhelming success of the short film, 'Caine's Arcade'. In 2017, we hope to surpass 1 million child participants!

Inspired by the short film, ‘Caine’s Arcade,’ the Global Cardboard Challenge is an annual event presented by the Imagination Foundation that celebrates child creativity and the role communities can play in fostering it. This September, kids of all ages are invited to build anything they can dream up using cardboard, recycled materials and imagination. Then on Saturday, October 7th, 2017, a day that commemorates the flash mob that made Caine's day in the short film, communities come together and play!
