In the morning there is an official cardboard competition: in teams of 2 children build a solution for sustainable challenges of businesses and municipalities of the region. A sustainable government building, a solution to the problem of flooding after heavy rainfall and a sustainable truck for a moving company. The creative minds of the children open up future opportunities for the businesses!
In the afternoon the building area is open for everyone! There are Makedo tools for everyone, cardboard resources to build with and hot chocolate to keep the energy high!
This challenge is made possible by many organizations from the region. They’ve hosted workshops in the weeks before the event, supplied building material and promoted the event in all possible ways. This joint effort has made it possible to realize this event at very short notice and brings a lot of opportunities for next editions of the GCC in the Netherlands!

Waterford’s Cardboard Challenge
This is Waterford Schools 3rd year participating in the Global Cardboard Challenge. It all began with the idea that students could create their own learning and have fun doing so. The bonus was that teachers could take on a different challenge, using an engineering design process and mentor students in the process. Students have embraced the idea of using their imagination and have learned new building skills to create in the process.
This year our event has grown from the 3 elementary schools, Schoolcraft, Grayson and Riverside to include Haviland, Beaumont, Cooley, and Donelson Hills. We will even be including a high school class who will take on the challenge and CAD their designs before building their prototype. Each of these schools will come together on Wednesday, Oct. 18th at Kettering High School and share our Day of Play with each other. We hope to see over 200 participants on our Day of Play come out and enjoy the creations.
